The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the option to challenge specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
